''Fantaaaaastic isn't it'' #Abigail'sParty

Jill Halfpenny is Beverly. Tough set of heels to fill after Alison Steadman made the character her own (so my Ma says) in the original television sitcom written and directed by Mike Leigh. But Gordon’s bennet Halfpenny gives a fabulous go at it and after my very initial angst (will this be £20 well spent or could I have hit the topshop sale OR better yet two bottles of gin?) and her momentary nerves.

Before you know it you're hanging off her every slinky pose, loaded question and contrived stirring...it's brilliant, outrageous and whilst you vow never to don her hostess style you also want to put on an LP, slap on the lip gloss and entertain just as she does. Vol au vent anyone?

Halfpenny's lingering ‘fantaaaaastic, isn't it’ is right on key with her forward gestures, gropes and fast pouring. Scratch below the surface and you see Leigh’s satirical portrayal of Britain in the ‘70s. The context is dark and destructive, simple characters trapped in hapless marriages and unfulfilling careers.
The small talk and drinks party etiquette is hysterical, familiar even, and whilst Beverly's contribution is fuelled by gossip you admire her honest brash insults, however undeserved!

An ideal little fix for a week night theatre treat with gal pal. Me and mine loved it. Add your own pre and interval drinks to loosen up and keep up with the cast.
