9/11 Ten years on...

I can't believe that today is the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. Unbelievably I still feel that there is so much I do not know, understand or can even begin to comprehend about 9/11. What is clear is that this event will haunt, and even hinder, us for many many years to come.

I read an article in The Times by Giles Whittell who documented the 'Terror in numbers':
Rebuilding the mass devastation and civilian morale has taken time...ten years and counting. We have a memorial, two pools in place of two great heights and a museum of artefacts but politically, socially and economically speaking we are a long way off from recovery. America's stance as a world super power has wavered greatly. War in Iraq and Afghanistan continues, and whilst Osama Bin Laden is dead Al Qaeda remains to be a threat, and conspiracy theories ensue. As one might imagine there is a mass of literature on 9/11 and I really ought to brush up on all aspects and details of its aftermath. Conspiracies go so far as to suggest America set up the attacks to warrant war on Afghanistan so that they could build a central oil pipeline. There are so many theories and questions surrounding the possibility of explosives contributing to the fall of the towers, failure to intercept the four hijacked planes, the attack on the Pentagon and so on. I think Obama's talk of resilience and remembrance is key, but I can't help wondering whether we will ever really know the cause. And perhaps more significantly the effect of retaliation.
